On 18th December, 1914, the 2nd East Lancashire battalion of 24 Brigade, 8th Division, left their billets in Estaires and moved into trenches along the Rue de Bacquerot to the north of Neuve-Chapelle. According to the records of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Charles Isles, the battalion Medical Officer, died from wounds on 19th December. However, the battalion diary recorded that he was one of six who were wounded on this day but that he died on the following day. |
